Located just a few hours from Arusha, Tarangire National Park is a popular stop on Tanzania's northern safari circuit. The park spans approximately 2,850 square kilometres, with hilly landscapes, vast savannah plains, high grasses, and a sprinkling of vibrant baobab trees. The Tarangire River, named after the park, runs through the area, providing a year-round water source for wildlife.
Tarangire is often overshadowed by the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, but it holds its own regarding wildlife viewing. The park is renowned for its large elephant population, where herds of up to 300 elephants can be seen, particularly during the dry season from July to October. Other wildlife includes wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, and elusive predators like lions and leopards.
Moreover, Tarangire National Park is a haven for bird lovers, with more than 550 bird species recorded. You'll see flocks of colourful yellow-collared lovebirds, rufous-tailed weavers, and the gigantic ostrich. The scenery, teeming with iconic baobab and acacia trees, is a stunning backdrop for wildlife viewing and photography. Less crowded than its famous counterparts, visiting Tarangire offers a more serene and intimate wildlife viewing experience. Its varied wildlife, rich birdlife, and striking landscapes make Tarangire National Park a rewarding and worthwhile safari destination.
